The young starlet was largely linked with potential transfers to Manchester United, Inter Milan and especially the Spanish Giants, Real Madrid. However, Barcelona have now swooped in, and secured Gomes’ services from right under the noses of their fiercest rivals.
Gomes made 30 appearances for Valencia last season, in which he managed to score 3 goals and bag 3 assists, whilst maintaining a passing success rate of 81%.
The play-maker also enjoyed a title-winning campaign with Portugal in the Euro 2016 tournament.
The Catalan giants released an official statement on their following the completion of the signing, which read:
“FC Barcelona and Valencia CF have reached an agreement that will bring André Gomes to the Catalan capital. Gomes will formalise the deal and be officially presented as a new FC Barcelona player next week.
“The 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder thus becomes the fourth reinforcement for Barça ahead of the 2016/17 season following the additions of Galician midfielderDenis Suárez and French defenders Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne.”
