The ESPN report that Jose Mourinho is still eyeing another defensive addition this summer, with Leonardo Bonucci and Raphael Varane on his radar.
Jose Mourinho has already made four major signings this summer, but looks unsettled as he aims to bring one more defender to Old Trafford before the 31st of August.
Reports claim that Manchester United have already made contact with Juventus and Real Madrid over potential moves for Raphael Varane and Leonardo Bonucci.
However, since Mourinho has already spent big this summer, he will have to raise funds for a new signing by selling some of his current players.
Manchester United broke the world transfer record this summer, after they re-signed their former midfielder, Paul Pogba, for a massive £89 million.
Since the arrival of Mourinho, the Reds have spent close to £150 million – putting them in the same spending range as their rivals, Manchester City.
But, the Special One is eager to get Manchester United back to their title-winning ways as soon as possible, and it doesn’t look like he will let money get in the way of him.
United have already recruited a defensive player this summer, Eric Bailly, who joined from Villarreal last month. But Jose Mourinho is looking for a more aged and experienced option.
Jose Fonte was believed to be on Mourinho’s wish list, but Southampton’s new manager Claude Puel recently confirmed that Fonte will not be leaving his squad this summer.
This means that Mourinho is only left with Varane and Bonucci to pursue.
But, he will face problems with both players. Varane already mentioned last month that he has no intention of leaving the Spanish capital this summer, as he sees a future under Zinedine Zidane.
As for Bonucci, his club may be reluctant to let him leave. Juventus have already lost Paul Pogba and Alvaro Morata this summer, meaning that they could be done for the window. Nevertheless, Jose Mourinho and his staff have large attractive powers.
