According to Portuguese media outlet Record, the Red Devils are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon player Gelson Martins. Spanish giants Real Madrid are mentioned as an interested club too.
Martins began his youth career at Sporting Lisbon’s academy. Over the years, he progressed through the ranks of the club. In March 2014, he was promoted to the B team, and later was given a 5-year senior contract with a whooping £52m buyout clause.
According to the Record, Real Madrid tried signing him 2 years ago for their Castilla team, but were rejected by Sporting Lisbon.
Gelson Martins has had an explosive start to the season, with 2 goals and 3 assists already. Manager Jorge Jesus even claimed: “In Portugal, there is no one like him.”

Manchester United started their season well, but lost form just after 3 games. They lost 3 games on the trot in all competitions after impressing in the first 3.
The 3-game losing streak was finally broken with a 3-1 win against Northampton in the English League Cup, and it was followed by a sound 4-1 win against 2015-16 Premier League champions Leicester City.
Manchester United have been heavily reliant on their forward line, with very few goals coming in from midfield.
The right side of the pitch is still a problem for the Red Devils, despite the signing of £26m-man Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Gelson Martins could provide Manchester United with a long term fix for the problem. The 21-year-old starlet primarily plays on the right wing, but can also play behind the striker and on the left. And unlike the current options available to United on the right, Martins is known as an excellent crosser of the ball.
According to the report, Manchester United sent scouts to watch him play against Legia Warsaw in the Champions League yesterday.
