Jose Mourinho will look to add Kurt Zouma to his Manchester United defensive line up in the summer.
United have faced defensive troubles all season long, with most of Mourinho’s key defenders either injured or inconsistent. Centre-back has been a position that has troubled him the most. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been out for some time, while Eric Bailly also picked up an injury last week.
The Portuguese is, therefore, looking to strengthen the centre-back position by bringing in Kurt Zouma from his former club.
Zouma enjoyed great success under Mourinho during his second spell at the helm of Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old was sidelined by a knee injury for most of the season, but has now made a comeback. However, Antonio Conte’s new defensive system has not let Zouma find a regular place back in the squad yet.
This will encourage Mourinho to bid for him in the summer. The Red Devils’ manager has often criticized Smalling and Jones for their lack of bravery in making a comeback from injury. With Daley Blind having to deputize as centre-half during the Manchester Derby, there is no doubt that the former Chelsea manager will have to increase depth in this position.
How willing Chelsea would be to part with Zouma is still a question. Long time captain John Terry is set to leave in the summer, and Conte will want to have a young and reputed defender like the Frenchman at the club, even if as a backup option.
Moreover, Mourinho is also rumoured to be planning a bid for Willian in the summer. This might mean he will have to pick only one player to preferably lure away from Chelsea.
