Barcelona legend Lionel Messi is set to extend his stay at Camp Nou by signing a new contract till 2021, with an option of a 4th year extension.
The Argentine superstar is keen to continue his love affair with the club which he joined at a tender age of 13. Lionel Messi, now 29, has been offered a new contract by Barcelona, which will keep him in Catalonia till 2021.
AS believes that the new deal will earn Messi £500,000-a-week, and will also include a massive buyout clause of €400m. However, reports suggest that the new contract will not be signed before the end of June, because of various accounting and financial reasons.
The news of Messi signing a new contract will be music to the ears of the newly appointed Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde, who has been trusted with a massive task of rekindling the Catalan supremacy in Spain and Europe.
The cules endured an uncharacteristic season in 2016/17, where they struggled to win titles whilst their bitter rivals Real Madrid won the biggest titles in the country and the continent.
Barcelona managed to win only 1 trophy in the form of Copa Del Rey, after being knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The second place finish in La Liga is also being looked upon as failure due to the high expectations at the club.
In a season where Barcelona weren’t anywhere near their best, their talismanic striker still managed to score an insane 54 goals in 52 games. Lionel Messi, who was at his brilliant best in many games during the season, was also the rightful winner of European Golden Shoe for the season.
