Timothy Fosu-Mensah may be edging closer to securing a temporary switch to Crystal Palace, but he has been assured that he has a big future ahead of him at Manchester United.
The youngster would have hoped for a chance to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s first team at United, but with new arrivals walking in through the Old Trafford door, it has cast a shadow of doubt over his future at the club.
However, the Telegraph claims that Fosu-Mensah has been told by Mourinho that he will be a crucial player for United in the years to come.
Due to the current overload of defenders, with the likes of Darmian, Shaw, Rojo, Valencia, Bailly, Jones, and Lindelof all able to put a shift in at full-back, it is hard to imagine the Dutchman getting much of a chance in the upcoming season.
As a result, the club has decided to send the 19-year-old out on loan to a club in the Premier League itself, as it would help him earn some crucial minutes on the pitch, and also allow him to gain some invaluable experience as he continues to develop his game.
Eagles boss Frank de Boer knows Fosu-Mensah very well from their time together at Ajax, and a reunion with his former boss could help get the best out of the young defender.
The Dutchman has been told by Mourinho that he is the long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia, and he will surely attempt to repay the faith put in him by the Portuguese manager.
He is already a fan favourite at Old Trafford after his solid displays in the few chances given to him by Mourinho and his predecessor Louis van Gaal. However, there are still aspects of his game that need working on, and Jose feels that the loan move will prove to be a lot more beneficial than initially expected.
Several newspapers have linked a number of right-backs to Old Trafford, with the likes of Serge Aurier and Fabinho said to be high on Mourinho’s wish list. However, it is testament to Mourinho’s trust in Fosu-Mensah that none of those players have been signed, and the ball is now in the youngster’s court to go and impress at Selhurst Park.
