Real Madrid, despite being the side that dominated FIFA’s list of the best starting eleven, have had a tough start to their season. On Sunday, that poor showing in the La Liga continued, as they suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of Girona.
The 11th position club went into halftime trailing 1-0 courtesy of Isco’s goal. This was despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s close chance minutes earlier. Apart from that, the home side had made life tough for Los Blancos with some close shots.
However, in the second half, Girona were swift in bagging the three points. This was courtesy of goals from Christian Stuani and Portu. The equalizer arrived in the 54th minute, and a short while later, Portu charmingly scored the winner, much to the triumphant roar of the stadium.
The goal was thought by many to have been scored from an offside position. Regardless, the decision stood, and now, Madrid are a whopping eight points behind rivals Barcelona in their attempt to retain the Spanish crown.
After the second goal, the camera was quick to pan to the face of Ronaldo, and needless to say, the FIFA Best Player of the Year wasn’t happy. In fact, his expression showed how utterly devastated he was. Eagle-eyed observers were quick to address this on Twitter and poke fun.
But the reason behind the expression isn’t a light one. Although the season is still too young to determine anything decisive, the eight points they trail by certainly appear to be worrisome, particularly since the La Liga titles of the past have often been decided solely during El Clasicos.
However, if Zidane’s men continue with this run at the domestic level, the Catalan giants will not have to fret too much this year. On Wednesday, Real travel to England to face off against Tottenham, and their fans will be hoping that their favorite Portuguese forward won’t have reason to look glum again.
