Jose Mourinho has revealed his shock at being told that Chelsea had put Nemanja Matic for sale in the transfer market last summer.
Matic had been crucial to two of Chelsea’s title successes over the last three seasons, and it goes without saying that the Blues are feeling his absence in the engine room this season.
Their struggles only add to the surprise that Abramovich sanctioned the sale of one of the club’s most important players, and many pundits and fans – both of United and Chelsea – are still scratching their heads as to how he was allowed to leave.
Earlier this week, Phil Neville stated that whoever decided to let the Serbian leave deserved to be sacked. Being a huge admirer of the 29-year-old, Mourinho too, was astonished when he found out that his most important player of the 2014-15 title win was available, and naturally, jumped at the chance to sign him.
“I was surprised when [Matic’s] agent called me to say, ‘Do you want him?'” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “I was surprised, but he’s an agent I know well.
“Normally he’s very direct and objective, he doesn’t waste time, he doesn’t try to get people to be interested in his players to improve their situation at their club. Normally he’s very straightforward, so when he told me, ‘You can have him if you want,’ of course I want.”
