Argentina star Angel Di Maria has accepted that he was close to joining La Liga giants Barcelona last summer, with the Catalans showing their interest in the winger after Neymar left a void in the squad at Camp Nou. However, the deal failed to materialise after the arrival of Ousmane Dembele from Dortmund.
Di María was open for a move to Barcelona from his current club Paris Saint-German despite having played for arch-rivals Real Madrid for four seasons, and in the process, helping them to ‘La Décima’ – their tenth European Cup. But he soon fell out of favour, and an unsuccessful move to England ensued, before PSG bought him a year later.
In a recent interview with ESPN, Di María revealed: “I was close and, at the same time, far away from reaching a deal with Barca. I never lost hope over the chance. I was calm about it, but it never happened. For sure, life takes many twists and turns and one never knows what the future might hold.
“The chance of going there wasn’t affected by the fact that I had already worn the white of Real Madrid. I might have been whistled at Camp Nou before, but it would have been nothing significant.”
The 29-year-old is hopeful to move away from Paris when the January transfer window gets into business, as he is finding hard to get play-time, having started in only six Ligue 1 games and not once in the Champions League, due to the arrival of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe last summer.
