Manchester United are trailing by 11 points to first-placed Manchester City in the Premier League, and should they wish to make a massive push at closing that gap, then superior quality is a must, and the winter window is an opportunity for the club to acquire precisely that.
One player in particular, who, for a short time in the summer caught the eye of Jose Mourinho, seems to have attracted stronger amount of attention this time around, but how viable of an option is he?
According to Diario Gol, Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto is a player that Mourinho is eager to land this winter.
The player can be deployed both defensively and as a holding midfielder, and is being touted as having the kind of mentality and ability that United can make the best use of.
The report added that the Portuguese manager has gotten in touch with Roberto’s agent over the possibility of the move. A factor that could work out in the favor of the Red Devils is that the 25-year-old has asked for a pay raise at Camp Nou, which at the moment, is not being met.
It seems that United are eager to capitalize on this, and have told the player that ‘he can earn whatever he wants at Old Trafford’. This is certainly an offer that will be extremely hard to refuse due to the sheer popularity of United and the Premier League.
However, in that regard, the offer of another English club for Roberto could prove to have more substance to it. Liverpool are believed to be huge admirers of the player as well, and Klopp is hoping to acquire his services as part of a swap deal that will see Philippe Coutinho depart to Catalonia.
Both deals could potentially meet his demands for a higher pay, and all are well aware which club’s offer will appear to be more appealing to Barcelona, so how will this saga progress?
