Arsenal and United are set to go head-to-head for the signature of Juventus defender Daniele Rugani, according to reports in Italy.

The Gunners are in desperate need of a quality central defender, with Per Mertesacker set to retire at the end of the season and Shkodran Mustafi’s likely to depart, leaving Laurent Koscielny as the only reliable protection at the back.

The Londoners are reportedly ready to offer Juventus a total sum of £35 million to try and convince them to sell the youngster.

Still only 23 years old, Rugani’s best years are well ahead of him. However, he has struggled to dislodge Medhi Benatia and break into the first team, which has hindered his development, forcing him to seek a move away from the club as a result.

Il Posticipo has claimed that the Italian defender is receiving a lot of interest from England, and could make a switch in the upcoming winter transfer window.

United have also shown an interest in signing a new center-back, as Victor Lindelof has underwhelmed since his move from Benfica in the summer. Moreover, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have suffered a number of injuries since the beginning of the campaign.

The Red Devils have recently been linked with a move for Stefan De Vrij,  but are also believed to be keeping tabs on Rugani’s situation with the Old Lady, and will be prepared to compete with Arsenal if the player is made available.
