Stefan de Vrij is believed to keen on a move to Man Utd in the summer, and is ready to snub the chance to join the club’s arch-rivals Liverpool in doing so.

Lazio’s sporting director Igli Tare revealed that the defender will definitely leave the club at the end of the season, with the player himself later confirming his imminent departure in an Instagram post.

De Vrij, who is 26 years of age, is very highly rated in Europe, and the confirmation that he will be leaving has attracted a lot of interest.

Liverpool, Everton, Man Utd, Chelsea, and Atletico Madrid are a few names amongst those interested in his signature. However, according to Mirror, the Dutchman would prefer a move to Old Trafford over all other possibilities.

United currently have a plethora of options at centre-back, but none of them have shown any sort of stability apart from Eric Bailly, who is enduring an injury-ravaged season.

Mourinho has already admitted that he would not be in the mix to sign a striker in the summer transfer window, so the focus could be more on the acquisition of a defender and a midfielder.

“We’ll explain our reasons later,” Lazio’s sporting director recently told Mediaset. “There’s a limit and that’s been breached, and it’s now become a question of correctness.

“He’s always been an exceptional professional and he’s given a lot to Lazio, and Lazio have given a lot to him, but at the end of the season, our paths will divide. We are withdrawing our offer to him.

“There’s nothing evil – we thank Stefan for what he has given to us, but for now, we are not going to explain the reasons behind this separation.

“We need to look ahead. We’ve grown a lot and we will continue to grow. The only certainty is that there will never be a lack of footballers and we’ve got to be good at finding them.”
