Man United have been given the thumbs up in their pursuit of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to reports.
The Frenchman is widely acknowledge as one of the best central defenders in world football, despite only being 24 years of age.
However, he has still struggled to force his way into Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI, and it appears as though the club has now deemed him surplus to requirements.

Jose Mourinho, who signed Varane for the Galacticos from Lens while he was their manager, is a firm admirer of the talented star, who comes with a lot of experience despite still being in the early years of his career.
Mourinho has been crying out for leaders to rise up in his squad, having allowed former captain Wayne Rooney to make a fairytale return to Everton last summer.
Jose has had major difficulties with the defense at his disposal as well, with Eric Bailly, who is undoubtedly their best central defender, suffering from a number of niggling injuries this season.
Phil Jones has been brilliant for the most part this season, but still has a number of inconsistent displays, while Chris Smalling’s very presence can cause a lot of confusion at the back at times.
Summer signing Victor Lindelöf has struggled to adapt to the demands of English football, and is still attempting to settle in at the club.
With all this in mind, Mourinho has identified Varane as the perfect solution to all his worries. United have tracked the defender for years now, but have always had the door slammed in their face, but there might be light at the end of the tunnel this time.
According to reports, Real are willing to let the defender move to Old Trafford for a fee in the region of £53.5 million, which is definitely a positive for United.
