Jose Mourinho is a man who is known for his tendencies to set up his teams defensively, so it is quite the irony that his defense is probably the weakest area of his squad at the moment.
Since his arrival at the club nearly two years ago now, he has constantly sought to improve his options in the position, with the captures of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelöf in back-to-back summer windows.
However, as brilliant as Bailly has been, he has struggled with a number of niggling injuries recently.
Lindelöf, on the other hand, has been underwhelming, and has struggled to break into the first team, having had a series of nervy games when given the chance to play.

The other options, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, have been at the club for quite a while now, but are dreadfully inconsistent.
As a result, Mourinho is determined to dive into the transfer market for a third summer running to secure the signature of another defender.
This time, high up on his list is Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez. The Uruguayan has long been a transfer target of United’s, but the club feels that now would be the perfect time to move in for him, according to reports in Corriere dello Sport.
The piece also suggests that both Real Madrid and Juventus are prepared to go head-to-head with United for the defender, who Atletico rate around the price range of €60 million.
Real are unlikely to be successful in their chase due to their fierce rivalry with cross-town rivals Atletico, while Gimenez may be put off by a move to Juventus due to the strength in depth in the center-back positions that they already possess – the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Mehdi Benatia, and Andrea Barzagli are forced to compete with each other for a starting birth.
This would probably cause Gimenez to lean in favour of a move to Old Trafford instead of Turin.
