Jose Mourinho is said to be unhappy with his defence, and wants to add more steel to his line-up despite the team conceding the second fewest goals in the Premier League.
There were reported stories of a genuine interest in Belgian international Toby Alderweireld. The Tottenham Hotspur defender is believed to the be the ideal player for Jose, who knows the pursuit of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is likely to go to waste.
The Belgian’s future has been a major source of speculation with him widely tipped to leave the club this summer. The central defender was declared fit by Belgium manager Roberto Martinez during the international friendlies.
But on Sunday, the player was left out by Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino in his squad to face Chelsea.

The 29-year-old sees his contract coming to an end in 2019, and earlier reports had stated that Spurs are aware of United’s interest, and are set to demand a fee in the region of £44 million.
This is the best chance for the Red Devils to have a go, with the player still not interested in signing a new deal.
The centre-back has himself been on the injured list this season, making only 17 appearances across all competitions this term.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been favouring Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen ahead of Toby, and with him missing out on the trip to Stamford Bridge, fans are convinced he could join the Red Devils.
