Manchester United intend to announce the signing of Fred next week, as they continue to make progress in talks with his representatives.

There have been endless reports linking the Shakhtar midfielder with a switch to the Theatre of Dreams over the course of the summer.

Manchester City were also thought to be in pursuit the 25-year-old, but will now turn their attention to other targets. Pep Guardiola has kept the signing of Napoli breakout star Jorginho at the highest priority this summer.

United have been finalising a deal for the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder, and Manchester Evening News reports that ‘most of the loose ends are tied up’.

M.E.N. revealed last week that United expect to complete the move for the Brazil international at the start of June. However, a source says an announcement is likelier after Brazil’s World Cup warm-up with Croatia at Anfield on Sunday.

Fred’s agent, Gilberto Silva, flew to London last week to accelerate the transfer proceedings. United have been negotiating with their Ukrainian counterparts over the signing fee.

The Red Devils will look to acquire Fred for a fee lower than his €60 million (£52.5m) release clause, although Shakhtar should ideally not back down on their demands. United could agree a fee rising to £52.5m with achievable add-ons.

Ed Woodward and the United management were unprepared to bid for Fred in January amid a possible transfer to City, but the Brazilian’s representatives flew over to England on deadline day nonetheless, in the hope the Mancunians would make an 11th hour bid.

Fred will serve as Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick’s replacement, as the Belgian’s contract is up this month, while the English veteran hung up his boots last month.
