Manchester United have identified Mateo Kovacic as one of their transfer targets for the summer.
Following the imminent departure of Marouane Fellaini as a free agent as well as Michael Carrick’s retirement, the Red Devils are light in the central midfield department.
Having completed and announced the signing of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, Jose Mourinho is looking to make quick work during this summer transfer window.
The transfer season is expected to stall with the start of the FIFA World Cup in Russia on the 14th of June, as players will direct their full focus to the most important trophy in world football. The window will eventually shut on the 14th of July.

In order to strengthen their midfield before the start of the next campaign, however, the Red Devils are reportedly planning to pursue Los Blancos’ talent Mateo Kovacic.
Kovacic made just 10 league starts in 2017-18, and most of his appearances have been off the bench. He has spent 3 years at Real Madrid largely in a bench role, as Casemiro has been the de facto starter whenever available.
Given the form the 26-year-old Brazilian has displayed for Real over the last 3 years, he is expected to be fixed in the driving seat in the battle for starting berths in a stacked Blancos squad.
Kovacic is looked on by Real Madrid as Luka Modric’s successor, however, and he will be looking to make an impact on whoever manages the Merengues this coming season following Zinedine Zidane’s departure from the club.
In fact, Kovacic’s agent, Nikky Vuksan, has dismissed claims that the Croatian would be leaving the Bernabeu. Talking to Goal, he stated: “We haven’t thought about leaving Real or interest from other clubs.”
Meanwhile, United have a disgruntled star in their ranks, as Paul Pogba has struggled to hit any sort of rhythm over the past couple of seasons at Old Trafford.
Therefore, the bizarre possibility of a swap between Kovacic and the Frenchman still cannot be ruled out at this point.
