Despite what certain headlines may lead one to believe, Manchester United haven’t got their transfer woes sorted out.
While the arrivals of Fred and Diogo Dalot were fresh sights and addressed major issues in the functioning of the side, it is quite obvious that more work needs to be done.
The focus seems to have shifted to the defense after the arrival of Dalot, with it seeming likely that Jose Mourinho may adopt SAF’s method of building a Premier League winning side from the back.
Besides, Mourinho’s own affinity for a defensive style of play makes such a move quite understandable. However, United’s top target for a leader in the heart of their defense may not be who many think it is.

As per MEN, Manchester United’s scouts haven’t made Toby Alderweireld as a ‘100% target’ for the summer, and may be looking at alternatives.
In fact, the same report gives away an alleged shortlist of options that Mourinho is believed to be considering for the coveted spot. They are as follows: Raphael Varane, Jerome Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu.
The Belgian was touted to be a certain Red Devil over the last few weeks, but things may have gone sour since. It is believed that Tottenham playing insistent hardball with his price-tag and United refusing to oblige may have resulted in this stall.
Further, the report adds that the scouts aren’t certain of Alderweireld’s profile either, and the doubts they have expressed may be the death of this saga.
Interestingly, United don’t exactly have a dearth of centre-backs at the club either. However, none of them have been able to establish the kind of role that Old Trafford is used to.
This has often led to David De Gea’s brilliance being rendered futile in the past, and how this transfer goes forward could be crucial to the club’s future.
