Manchester Evening News reported last week that the Red Devils will pursue the signature of Jerome Boateng. According to them, the 29-year-old fell out with the Bayern Munich brass last season, which could potentially motivate him to look for a move elsewhere.

According to Don Balon, Real Madrid are also supposedly in the market for him. With age starting to catch up on Sergio Ramos, this move would go a long on keeping them at the top in the near future.

But the aforementioned source also used a headline reading ‘Mourinho steals a signing from Florentino Perez which seemed decided’.

The Ghana-born German international spent the 2010-11 season with Manchester City. He did not have much success there, as Roberto Mancini preferred playing him at left-back, which was a mitigating factor.

Since returning to his homeland with a move to Bayern, Boateng has cemented his name as one of the world’s best stoppers. Over the past 7 seasons, he has consistently been the Bavarian side’s best center-back. He’s also been a member of the German international team consistently in this period.

Manchester United Encouraged To Sign Eric Bailly Replacement

Bayern signed 22-year-old Niklas Sule from Hoffenheim last summer. Ever since, he’s been afforded more and more playing time as a starter.

The youngster is an assured, skilled player in the mould of a complete modern defender. Therefore, Bayern are unlikely to miss Boateng’s presence should he leave for greener pastures.

Manchester United have identified eight central defensive targets, according to MEN. This list includes Spurs stopper and Belgian international Toby Alderweireld, who is also in the midst of a contract dispute with his current club.

In all probability, Jose Mourinho will be content with signing one of the two. Both are world-class defenders, and would significantly strengthen United’s backline. Only time will tell if any of these prospective deals go through.
