Daily Mail reported today that Kovacic will look to make his way out of the reigning European champions’ locker room over the summer.
While he has so far tallied 109 appearances in 3 seasons at the Bernabeu, most of them have been off the bench in cameo roles.
The deep-lying playmaker was signed by Rafa Benitez in the summer of 2015, but the Italian manager’s Real Madrid career was short-lived, as he was sacked in January 2016.
This made way for Zinedine Zidane to take over the reins. While the Frenchman was successful in leading Los Merengues to 3 successive Champions League titles, this came at the cost of upsetting many players previously in the first team. These include the likes of Danilo, Pepe, James Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata.
Kovacic was competing for a berth with the likes of Casemiro, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos. While he sparkled in the limited playing time he got, the aforementioned trio have been the world’s best central midfielders in the past 3 years.
The playmaker possesses all the requisite attributes in his game to be a world-class midfielder for United. He has finished with a passing accuracy north of 90% in each of his last 3 campaigns with Los Vikingos. Kovacic flourishes best in a deep-lying role with Los Blancos.
If he does make the switch, one possibility for the Red Devils would be a straight swap with Pogba going on the other side. Madrid were in the running for the Frenchman in 2016, but baulked at the world record asking price eventually paid by United.
Kovacic would definitely be a great fit at Old Trafford given his strengths. The playmaker is adept at controlling the pace of games. He’s not afraid to put in a foot when needed either.
