Manchester United have pulled themselves out of the Gareth Bale sweepstakes. With less than 24 hours left before the British transfer window closes, the Red Devils have decided against a deadline day bid.
They are eager to add to their squad, in need of improvement in several crucial areas. Having also been linked to Chelsea winger Willian and Inter wideman Ivan Perisic, they have put the signing of a top centre-back as their no. 1 priority.
Real Madrid are reluctant to let the Wales international go following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit. The former shone in their pre-season game against Roma, also knocking in a stunning equalizer against Juventus in the match before.
Jose Mourinho had demanded an early wrap-up of the players on his wishlist. Bale was supposedly on a list also consisting of Fred, Willian, Perisic, and Alderweireld. The Belgian was largely expected to come in from Spurs, but with less than 24 hours to go before the deadline, a move remains in the balance.
The Reds were unable to seal a deal for Bale in time either, and Ronaldo’s departure to The Old Lady has handed the keys of the Madrid club to the 29-year-old speedster.
Manchester United will now be hard-pressed to conclude their business. A deadline day rotating door might still not be out of question, however.
Tottenham want Alderweireld to leave for a fee of £55 million, but despite their interest, the Red Devils are refusing to cough up the amount. Harry Maguire looks no closer to leaving Leicester for Old Trafford either.
Barcelona’s interest in Paul Pogba has complicated a prospective Yerry Mina transfer. A package deal involving Andre Gomes was rumoured to have been rejected by United earlier this week.
