Jose Mourinho Talks About His Current Squad After Failed Transfer Window

Jose Mourinho admits his Manchester United squad is no stronger than it was last season, after a ‘simple’ transfer window only brought three players to Old Trafford.

Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant signed deals with the Red Devils this summer. Of those signings, only the Brazilian is expected to push for a starting role during the 2018-19 campaign. Mourinho heaped praise on Fred, and said he will be a player to ‘enjoy’ this season.

The United gaffer was said to be desperate to sign a centre-back before Thursday’s deadline. The likes of Leicester City’s Maguire, Spurs star Toby Alderweireld, and Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin were enquired about.

But neither of the transfers materialized. United were, thus, left with by and large the same squad that lost the Premier League title with over a month left to play.

On the plus side, however, Manchester City haven’t broken the bank in the transfer market either. Perhaps Mourinho has had enough time to iron out the wrinkles that presented themselves after Halloween last year.

“I look at us, I focus on us – not much on the others. For us, it’s a very simple market as you can see. It’s the same squad. We change the third goalkeeper for Lee [Grant] because Joel [Pereira] is such a good young goalkeeper that he needs to play,” said Jose.

He continued in the same vein, saying: “We change [Daley] Blind for a 19-year-old kid [Dalot] that we believe has the potential to play right-back and left-back. We changed [Michael] Carrick for Fred, so our squad is the same.”

When asked about the incredible fees that were involved in a number of transfer deals this summer, Mourinho added: “That’s the way it is. That’s the way football has changed in the last [few] years. You accept or you don’t accept.”
