Manchester United are prepared to make Kalidou Koulibaly the most expensive defender on the planet come January.

The Red Devils have already had two of their bids for the Napoli superstar rejected. In fact, the Serie A club has further raised its evaluation of the in-demand defender, who is now believed to be worth £100 million.

Meanwhile, the Mancunian giants continue to face persistent issues in their defence, after having failed to bring in a centre-back in the 2018 summer transfer window.

But now, in order to save their campaign and find a permanent fix to their problem, United could indeed be prepared to take some major measures at the start of the new year.

According to Standard, the Reds are ready to break the world transfer record for a defender to secure the services of Kalidou Koulibaly.

Even the club’s vice chairman, Ed Woodward, is prepared to shell out the required cash, which would trump the £75 million record fee paid by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk.

However, the report adds that the Napoli man isn’t the only player in Mourinho’s sights. The Portuguese tactician has also been closely monitoring Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld, Inter starlet Milan Skriniar, and AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.

While Alderweireld could be available for a cut price amount of £25.4m, Napoli and Inter’s elimination from the Champions League could also boost Manchester United‘s chances of signing Koulibaly and Skriniar respectively.

In order to make room for a new centre-back, however, the likes of Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly could be shown the exit door at the Theatre of Dreams as soon as the transfer window reopens. An exciting January awaits.
