France Ligue 1 Football News
The Ligue 1 is France's primary football competition, featuring the topmost clubs in the country.
This league system was established back in the year 1932 as National, in which 16 teams contested for the title. But a season later, the tournament organised a legitimate promotion and relegation system with the original teams, and the competition was renamed as Division 1. The name was finally changed to Ligue 1 in 2002.
This prestigious competition is one of the biggest and most entertaining football leagues on the planet, and it's current on the 5th spot in Europe's Top 5 Leagues.
The Ligue 1 title is, at present, contested by 20 clubs, wherein each team faces the 19 others twice, in a season that lasts over the space of 10 months. The competition format is a double round-robin system, consisting of 380 matches per season. The teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and none for defeats. Teams are placed in the table according to their total points, followed by the goal difference, and then goals scored. In case of ties for the title, relegation, or qualification for the European competitions, a play-off match is contested as a decider. The top 3 teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League, and the fourth-placed side for the UEFA Europa League. The three lowest placed teams are relegated to Ligue 2.
An astonishing 19 teams have managed to win the French league title since its establishment - Saint-Étienne (10), Marseille (9), Nantes (8), Monaco (7), Lyon (7), Bordeaux (6), Paris Saint-Germain (6), Reims (6), Nice (4), Lille (3), Sochaux (2), Sète (2), Lens (1), RCF Paris (1), Strasbourg (1), Olympique Lillois (1), Roubaix-Tourcoing (1), Auxerre (1), and Montpellier (1).
