Barcelona are eyeing up a move for Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes.

According to reports, the La Liga giants have been keeping a watch on Gomes, and have been impressed with his rapid progress through the ranks at United. The youngster, who is a first year scholar at Old Trafford, is contracted to his club till 2018.

Despite Gomes signing for the club as a 13-year-old, he has regularly found himself playing for higher age groups. He made his debut for United’s u-18 side at just 14.

There are said to be a few concerns about the youngsters height, but his ability and skill on the ball should be enough to make up for it.

Gomes is the cousin of former United winger Luis Nani. At the start of the season, he became the youngest player to score a hat-trick for the club in the last 15 years when he came off the bench and found the net three times against Everton for the u-18s. That same week, he captained England’s u-17 side and turned 16 years old.

Nicky Butt, who oversees the Academy at the Theatre of Dreams, admitted that he, along with several other coaches at the club, have high hopes for Gomes.

‘The technical quality’s there,’ Butt told The Times.

‘It’s ridiculous. I look at the kids and they’re miles better than I was at their age — technically. We’ve got some unbelievable players.

‘Angel Gomes is a young talented player that we have massive hopes for.’
