Chelsea have been informed about a staggering £40 asking price for Moussa Dembele following their surprise pre-transfer deadline enquiry, according to a report from Sky Sports.

Antonio Conte, who is also pondering over a last minute deal for defender Sead Kolasinac from Schalke before Tuesday night’s deadline, must now decide whether or not to place a formal offer for Dembele.

Chelsea have shown interest in Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon also, along with making Dembele a January target.

Sky sources claim Celtic are reluctant to offload Dembele this month, but are believed to have told Chelsea that it would take £40m to land him. The Scottish club signed the French youngster for just £500,000 from Fulham last summer.

Chelsea now have to decide whether to follow up on their enquiry with a bid for Dembele, or whether to shelve their interest until the end of this season.

The 20-year-old, who is under the watchful radar of the Blues since he was at Fulham, has netted 20 goals in 38 games for Celtic following his arrival in the summer, as Brendan Rodgers’ side continues to dominate the Scottish league.

Signing Dembele for such a huge fee would seem to be a bit problematic for Chelsea considering the rush hour of the final day of the window, but it would not be the first time they have surprised everyone, having re-signed David Luiz for £30m in August.

Antonio Conte is looking for various ways to strengthen his attacking options this month, having expressed an interest in Swansea striker Fernando Llorente. He is also a big fan of Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke.
