Barcelona are weighing up a sensational move for Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera.

According to reports, Herrera is being eyed as a potential replacement for the Catalan club’s midfield maestro Andres Iniesta, who is nearing the end of his career.

Spanish news outlet Don Balon have revealed that Barcelona are also keeping an eye on Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho as well as Paris Saint-Germain’s Italian starlet Marco Verratti. However, they are said to be more keen on Herrera, as he suits their style of play perfectly.

The 27-year-old has been a linchpin in United’s midfield this season. Having struggled to earn a regular starting berth under Louis van Gaal, the arrival of Jose Mourinho has seen the player’s fortunes change.

Mourinho has trusted Herrera and has made him a fixture in his starting XI. He has been crucial to everything United do, regularly putting in consistent displays. His performances have earned him rave reviews this season, and have even led to some tipping him to be United’s new captain should Wayne Rooney decide to depart in the summer.

The Spaniard was used more as an attack-minded central midfielder under Van Gaal, but his role has been changed to more of a holding midfielder under Mourinho – a position in which he has flourished. He has managed to score twice this season, while also grabbing seven assists.

It is unlikely that Mourinho will be ready to let go of Herrera in the summer, especially considering United’s lack of midfield options following the departure of Morgan Schneiderlin to Everton and Bastian Schweinsteiger to Chicago Fire.

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the Catalan club’s midfielder Ivan Rakitic in the past, and Mourinho is likely to demand that the club let go of the Croatian if they want to sign Herrera.
