Lucas Hernandez has signed a new long-term contract with Atletico Madrid that will see him remain at the club till at least 2022.

By signing the five year contract, Lucas put an end to months of speculation linking him to clubs such as Manchester City, Manchester United, and Barcelona.

The 21-year-old has made 20 appearances for Atletico this season, and his performances have attracted several of Europe’s elite clubs, but the youngster admitted that he is delighted to stay at the Vicente Calderón, with the “club of his life”.

Lucas is following in the footsteps of his father, Jean-Francois Hernandez, who played for the club between 2000 and 2001. His brother, 19-year-old Theo Hernandez, is also an Atletico Madrid prodigy, and is currently on loan at Alaves.

The right-back is set to start for Los Rojiblancos in their semi-final clash with local rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, due to injuries to first-team regulars Juanfran Torres and Sime Vrsaljko.

Atletico issued a statement confirming Lucas’s new contract which read: “Lucas Hernandez has extended his contract with Atletico for two more seasons.

“Since his beginning in Atletico’s lower categories, his career has been brilliant, standing out in all the stages until he made it into the first team in the 2015-16 season.

“This season, the French left-back has continued his great progression, playing 20 matches so far. He is also a regular in the squad lists of the French under-21 national team.”

Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero stated: “This is a source of joy, since he is a player with an enormous potential and a spectacular future.

“He has strength and speed, along with an astonishing maturity for one so young. Lucas has had to perform in very awkward moments and has always done it at a great level. This is great news for us.”
