Manchester United Begin Talks To Sign Benfica Shot-Stopper
Manchester United have begun talks with Benfica over the possibility of signing their goalkeeper, Ederson, according to reports in Portugal.
The Red Devils seem to have given up in their fight to keep David de Gea at the Theatre of Dreams, and it appears that the Spaniard will be off to Real Madrid this summer.
As a result, the club are looking for a long term replacements for their no. 1 keeper, and have noted Ederson as a possible target for the summer. The 23-year-old shot-stopper has been at Benfica since 2015, and has made 45 appearances for the Portuguese club since.
According to Portugal-based news outlet O Jogo, United have approached Benfica about the possibility of signing Ederson, and talks are now underway. However, United aren’t the only club interested in signing the Brazilian keeper, and will face stiff competition from their ‘noisy neighbours’ Manchester City.

Claudio Bravo has had a miserable first season in the Premier League with the Citizens since signing from Barcelona in the summer. He has struggled for form and fitness, and at the age of 34, it seems like his best days are well and truly behind him.
City manager Pep Guardiola appears set to offer back-up keeper Willy Caballero a new one-year extension, as he proved to be a ready replacement when Bravo was not in the side. However, Caballero himself is 35, and Pep is likely to be on the lookout for a young keeper who would suit his playing style, and Ederson seems to fit the bill.
Despite being only 23, Benfica are holding out for a huge sum of money for Ederson. The keeper reportedly has a massive buy-out clause of around £51 million in his contract with the club, and this is likely to ward off potential suitors.
United’s interest will not be wavered by money, but they might still look elsewhere for a more proven keeper who is guaranteed to be worth the sum paid for him. They have recently been linked with moves for Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid, as well as Kasper Schmeichel, son of Red Devils’ legendary keeper Peter.
