Jose Mourinho wants to bring Raphael Varane and Marquinhos to Manchester United in his bid to form a new look central defensive partnership.

Starsport reports that Mourinho has dropped Chris Smalling from his plans for next season, as the Manchester United boss seeks to sign star defenders from Real Madrid and PSG. Meanwhile, Smalling situation has alerted the likes of West Ham, Everton and Crystal Palace, who all are interested in signing the English defender.

Chris Smalling was chosen as the Player’s Player of the Season under Louis van Gaal, but he has managed to feature only 18 times under Mourinho this season.

The Portuguese tactician doesn’t believe Smalling is good enough to play a part at United next season, and the former Real Madrid boss wants to lure Varane to replace the England international. It’s worth noting that Varane and Mourinho shared a special bond at Real, and it was often the case that Varane was selected over Pepe.

The other name on Jose’s wishlist is Marquinhos from Paris Saint-Germain. The Brazilian defender, who has been scouted on a number of occasions by the Red Devils, remains a long term target for the Old Trafford outfit.

For now, Mourinho’s hopes of signing either or both the center-backs hang in the balance, as his side needs to defeat Ajax on Wednesday to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Thus, the Europa League final could prove to be one of the crucial matches of the eventful career that the Portuguese coach has had.
