Ander Herrera is set to turn down a switch to Barcelona in the summer transfer window and remain at Manchester United.

The Catalan giants have been keeping tabs on Herrera for most of the season, and rumours continued to circulate in papers, suggesting a move back to Spain was imminent for the midfielder.

With Ernesto Valverde now taking over the reins from Luis Enrique at Barcelona, the rumours began to look as though they had some credibility to them, as Herrera worked under Valverde at Athletic Bilbao for a single year before United snapped him up for £28.8 million in 2014.

The Spaniard has since gone on to win the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the Europa League with the club. He has been in terrific form for the Reds, and enjoyed his best season with the club in the recently concluded campaign, becoming an indispensable player for Jose Mourinho in the Portuguese manager’s first season at Old Trafford.

The Spain international’s efforts were recognized by the club’s fans, as he was awarded the Sir Matt Busby Player Of The Year award, beating the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Valencia to it.

As a result, despite reports of a return to Spain to work under his former boss, Herrera admits that he is very happy at the Theatre of Dreams, and is determined to get better and win more trophies with the club.

He recently stated: “I’m very thankful with Man United because they came to Spain to sign me three years ago. The only thing I have in my mind every time I’m on the pitch is that I want to give all the affection back. I think that’s the right way, I try to go to the pitch and to finish the game and I cannot complain to myself.

“I can say I have given everything, I don’t want to stop, I am very optimistic and hard working player. I want to keep playing, keep working hard, keep improving, not only personally but also with the club and the team, I want to keep improving to continue winning things.

“Of course I’m happy with my development and I am happy with my time at the club so far but I’m not going to stop here. I want to keep playing, keep improving, keep making our fans proud.”
