Revealed: Why Jose Mourinho Doesn’t Want Fabinho
Jose Mourinho has ruled out a move for Fabinho, because he prioritises signing Tottenham’s Eric Dier over the Brazilian.
Fabinho, who had an outstanding 2016-17 season with Monaco, has been linked with Manchester United for many months.
However, a recent report from European Football expert Gabriele Marcotti states that Mourinho’s top midfield target has been Tottenham’s Eric Dier, and only if the move for the Englishman fails will the Red Devils make a move for Fabinho.
Marcotti revealed: “Fabinho is a guy that they as a club wanted to hang on to. Equally, Fabinho’s people who have close ties to the Manchester United manager of course, they view things a little differently.
“They’ve been pushing quite aggressively last summer, in the January transfer window. “I’ve been led to believe that United had other priorities, other top targets in that defensive midfield position, among them of course Eric Dier.
“But Fabinho they view as an alternative. If they can’t get Dier, they’re not going to be held to ransom by Dier or anybody else, then Fabinho is somebody that they rate.
“They like his versatility, he can also play at full-back of course. They like his tactical intelligence and think they can get him at a reasonable price.”
Apart from Dier, Mourinho is also understood to be keen on a reunion with Nemanja Matic, but it will be interesting to see whether Chelsea would sell one of their star players to the rival club.
Matic knows that his place in the Chelsea starting lineup next season could be in jeopardy if Antonio Conte brings in Fabinho’s teammate Tiemoue Bakayoko to Stamford Bridge.
A dream move to Manchester United might have hit a snag, but Fabinho shouldn’t be short of other offers, as Atletico Madrid are trying to lure him away from France despite having a transfer ban that restricts them from signing anyone this summer.
