According to a report published in the Daily Mail, Premier League side Tottenham are all set to pursue Chris Smalling in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Spurs recently lost Harry Maguire to Leicester City, and are on the outlook for a central defender. In such times, the Englishman from Manchester United has emerged as a possible target for Mauricio Pochettino, as the boss aims to launch a successful Premier League and Champions League campaign in the season to follow.

With Wembley their new home ground, Tottenham are under pressure to deliver in different circumstances, and are hence looking to build a team filled with strength in depth.

Smalling was criticised by Mourinho several times last season, and since the Portuguese has gone on and brought in Victor Lindelof, an exit for the England international seems ever so likely.

However, Smalling is not the only player on the London club’s list, as Burnley’s Michael Keane and Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson are other names that could make the cut.

Tottenham had one of the best defences in the League last season. and will want to add to the strong partnership of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

An advantage that Chris might have if he does decide to make a move to play in London is that he will be around many familiar faces like Kane, Dier, and Walker, through them playing together for the Three Lions.

The World Cup in 2018 is the aim for the player, and staying at Old Trafford might not help him achieve it.
