Manchester United’s disappointing Premier League campaign had a few noteworthy flops, but none stand out as much as Luke Saw.

The young English defender had a torrid season, right from his weight problems to whispers of not getting along with the manager. In fact, no one would have batted an eyelid if he had been sold within days of the transfer window opening.

The 22-year old, however, seems to be taking it all on the chin and putting in some much needed gym work over the summer. He recently took to Instagram to post a picture of himself at teammate Phil Jones’ wedding, and looked much leaner than he has done for many months now.

This, combined with M.E.N Sport revealing how Shaw had returned to Carrington already to continue his recovery from injury, underlines his intent to go back to the drawing board and come back a fitter and better player next summer.

The manager has seen Shaw drift in and out of the team last season, but the manner in which the defender has bounced back is sure to have impressed Mourinho.

The Portuguese man is well known to be an advocate of hard work and tiring discipline, and is sure to welcome what Shaw describes as a change in attitude and lifestyle after having a clear-the-air talk with Mourinho in early April.

Things started looking up as Shaw made a change in his eating and fitness habits, and made a conscious decision, at the advice of his girlfriend, to move out of his house-sharing arrangement with friends.

His performances started improving, with his determination highlighted during the Anderlecht quarter-final second leg. The injury setback he later suffered against Swansea was unfortunate, but all the signs point to Shaw making a strong comeback as United’s first-choice left-back next season.
