Amidst all the hullabaloo regarding David De Gea’s future at Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has claimed that he can ‘guarantee’ that the Spaniard would remain at Old Trafford.

While addressing a press conference ahead of United’s clash against Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup, the Portuguese manager offered a definitive response on the future of the Spanish international.

“I can guarantee that he is not going this season,” the manager told the reporters on Saturday. “My feeling is it will very difficult for him to go. He is a very honest, straight boy.

“He was contacted for a long time, the club was closed and then we opened. I always have this feeling when a player has a desire to go, then I don’t like to stop players because you don’t get from them what you expect from them if they want to move and they don’t.

“So we opened it and then they decided to close it. I see him really happy, focused, working better than ever and 100 per cent he stays with us.”

De Gea joined the Red Devils as a diminutive figure in the summer of 2011, but has since gone on to become one of the most important players in the team. Naturally, he has emerged as one of the best goalkeepers of this generation. The Spaniard has won a Premier League, an FA Cup, and most recently the Europa League with the Red Devils.

Interestingly, the signing of Sergio Romero didn’t deter his belief, and he kept on performing at the same top class level despite the stiff competition from the Argentine. In fact, Mourinho believes that Romero brings out the best in De Gea, as the two share a healthy and competitive relationship.

Jose continued: “I’m impressed with Sergio but I’m also impressed with David. I think the best thing that could happen to David was the way Romero played last season, because until then David was clearly a safe man, a safe choice and after what Romero did last season David thinks he’s training in another way.”

Having two top class goalkeepers can surely be a great thing for any club, and with Manchester United now competing in the Champions League, they could use some squad rotation to keep their players at the top of their game.

With Romero and De Gea both in the squad, the Special One boasts of serious depth in the goalkeeping department – something not many clubs in Europe can be proud of. This is definitely good news for Manchester United hierarchy and their fans.
