The transfer window in European football consists of two months of non-stop rumours flowing in after each passing second, linking all sorts of different players to numerous clubs. While some are laughable, some turn into actual deals, and some leave one and all stunned. Some clubs say goodbye to their legends while they prepare to bring in new names that they hope will eventually serve as ideal replacements.

Like every year, this summer has also seen the biggest teams of Europe being linked with the brightest talents in the world. While the money for some may be amounts that will leave jaws dropped, most of them have a high possibility of coming to life.

Manchester United are one of the biggest names in the sport, and are currently undergoing massive personnel change in order to rise back to the top. During such times, it is no surprise that almost every player who has a possibility of leaving their current club, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho has already begun his summer spending after splashing huge amounts of dough on Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku. With one defender and one centre forward welcomed into the ranks, the middle of the park is a position the boss is keen on strengthening in the weeks to come. There is still over a month left for the window to end, and that is enough time for the Red Devils to bring in a new man in midfield.

With a bucket full of options to look towards, here is a list of 5 midfielders that Jose Mourinho can attempt to sign in the next few weeks:

1. Marco Verratti

The Paris Saint-Germain player is one of the finest with the ball at his feet at the moment – an attribute that has led to him being intensely chased this summer. The central midfielder was rumoured to be a Barcelona target for a majority of the last few months, but that deal failed to reach a successful conclusion.

The 24-year-old  is currently being chased by Jose Mourinho, with £60 million assumed as the price that will be paid to bring him in. The deal faces a set of pros and cons, and hence, it hangs in the middle of nowhere. The positive side of this negotiation is that Mino Raiola is Verratti’s newly appointed representative, as the super agent also represents Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Romelu Lukaku.

While this falls heavily in Mourinho’s favour, PSG’s demand of asking for Anthony Martial along with the cash comes across as a problematic hurdle for Manchester United. Verratti is a player full of abilities and talents of the highest order, and his inclusion in England could help the team propel to the heights they wish to achieve.

2. Eric Dier

Despite the squad spending over £100 million on their two signings so far, their manager has made it clear that he is not yet satisfied with the business done so far. With that intention and the predictions put forward by the bookies, the red side of Manchester have emerged as a potential destination for Tottenham midfielder, Eric Dier. The star is predicted to sign for Manchester United with the odds currently placed at 2/1.

Mourinho is eager to bring a defensive midfielder to Old Trafford, and with the Nemanja Matic deal not coming through, the Englishman could be the ideal backup option. The Tottenham youngster is one of Pochettino’s favourite men in the squad, and with the London side having recently lost Kyle Walker to Manchester City, pulling Dier away might be a tough task to accomplish.

3. Fabinho

Monaco are known to be a team that sell their star players to the big boys, and there are not many better talents than Fabinho in the French side right now. The midfielder was extremely influential in the club’s Ligue 1 winning campaign, and is also targeted by fellow major clubs such as PSG and Barcelona.

The English giants were extremely close to signing the player in the early days of July, and as far as experts and predictors are concerned, being patient will only bring good news for the faithful supporters of the Stratford End.

4. Nemanja Matic

Jose Mourinho was the one that brought Nemanja Matic to Stamford Bridge during his second spell at Chelsea, and the boss is now eager for a reunion in Manchester. The Portuguese manager is a big fan of the Serbian international, and wants him to be the defensive midfielder at Old Trafford next season.

The deal had been facing problems in terms of progress so far this window, but Antonio Conte’s recent purchase of Tiemoue Bakayoko might finally allow the negotiations to take place. If rumours are assumed to be true, then Matic is also keenly interested in signing for the Reds, and that is exactly why the following weeks could bring some positive news for the fans of Manchester United.

5. Blaise Matuidi

This might be a long shot and nothing more than a rumour doing the rounds, but it is certainly one that has raised a few eyebrows. The French international has been a part of the PSG set up since 2011, and recently admitted that he might have played his last match for the side in the season gone by. The midfielder is also eyed by the boss as an ideal partner for fellow countryman, Paul Pogba.

The list of names goes on much longer than the ones above, but the aforementioned players fall under the category of those most likely to take place. Jose Mourinho is a winner, and winning is all he aims to do, be it on the pitch or in transfer related matters off it.

With a few more players guaranteed to come to Manchester United in the following weeks, who do you put your money on?
