Matic Heats Up A Storm After Controversial Comparison Between Chelsea And United
After having put up a brilliant performance at Old Trafford on opening day, Manchester United’s £40 million summer signing Nemanja Matic has hailed the club as the biggest one he has played for in his career. In an interview with Sky Sports, the 29-year old holding midfielder spoke about his move from Chelsea, and how big of a role Jose Mourinho played in his decision to switch clubs.
The Portuguese manager had purchased him from Benfica during his stint at Chelsea, where he won the League twice, once in 2014, and the second last season, albeit under Antonio Conte. Matic revealed: “Mourinho was the reason and so was the club, Manchester United, so you don’t need to think a lot about if you are going to come. My decision was very quick and very clear.”
The Serbian international has been hailed as a masterstroke of a signing for the Red Devils. Football pundits from all over the country are unable to comprehend how Chelsea let such a talented player leave for a rival club. Blues manager Antonio Conte himself was very disappointed with the transfer of the player. In a press conference earlier this month, the Italian boss was visibly angry at a question about Matic.
The central defensive midfielder has won the hearts of the Old Trafford faithful, as his antics and sheer brilliance on the pitch have swiftly made him a fan favorite. He was named the Man of the Match during their 4-0 triumph over West Ham on opening day.
Matic is clearly aware of the fanfare and the passion of the supporters, as he continued: “After every training session, they are waiting for us outside the training ground to take pictures, to give a signature so I think the club is one of the biggest in the world. Maybe you have two or three clubs similar to United, but Manchester is one of the biggest clubs in the world for sure.”
It is clear that the English giants are in a positive place to put up a Premier League challenge this season. With Matic securing the defensive aspect of the midfield, and Pogba looking more and more dangerous attacking up front, United have a decent shot at the title, provided Mourinho is able to spin all the talent he has at hand in the perfect manner.
