Manchester United are tracking Roma starlet Lorenzo Pellegrini, according to reports.

The 21-year-old is earning rave reviews back in Italy, and is showing some promise in the early stages of his fledgling career. This has drawn the attention of Jose Mourinho, who was alerted to the youngster’s potential by a well-trusted scout.

According to Italian news outlet Corriere dello Sport, the scout was actually present for Roma’s 3-0 win over Verona on Saturday to watch another midfielder, Radja Nainggolan, who United have been tracking for a couple of years now.

However, it was Pellegrini who impressed the scout the most across the 90 minutes, and United are now considering the possibility of bringing him to Old Trafford. The starlet is a midfielder by trade, and despite the Red Devils having a wealth of options in his position, they have identified him as one for the future.

The English giants have made contact with the player’s agent to register their interest, and it is understood that he will cost the club around £26.5m – a ridiculously cheap figure in today’s crazy market. The Italian currently earns around £35,000-a-week, which actually makes him one of the club’s best paid players.

A move to United would see a massive rise on those figures, but it is understood that the player is keen on staying at the club for many years to come. Born in Rome, Pellegrini was a fan of the club growing up, and he is eager to replicate the feats of his idols Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Florenzi by becoming the club’s captain some day.

Last season, the midfielder became the youngest player to be involved in 10 goals in the Serie A. He ended the season with 8 goals and 7 assists for Sassuolo, and having sold him on just two years ago, this prompted Roma to activate the buy-back clause they had inserted in his contract.

So far, he has started three games and has made a strong impression in Rome. He is also keen on making it to the World Cup next year, and if he keeps this form up, he will have staked his claim to be on the plane to Russia with the Italian national team.
