Former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has claimed that Manchester United will sign Roma starlet Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move away from Roma despite only re-signing for the club this summer. He has made 5 appearances for the Italian side so far this season, and his performances are earning him rave reviews.

The young starlet has also attracted the interest of several European giants, including cross-town rivals Manchester United and Manchester City.

However, Hislop believes that the red half of Manchester will prove to the successful party in this transfer pursuit, because ‘they have a need’ for a new central midfielder.

“A ball-playing, very technical midfielder,” he told ESPN FC. “I think he will (go to Man United). I think this makes a whole lot of sense. If you’ve got big money to spend, he’s the kind of player you want to spend it on. Manchester United do, they have a need. I think it makes a whole lot of sense for player and club.”

Pellegrini came through the academy at Roma, and made his professional debut in football for the Serie A side. In 2015, the youngster opted to sign for Sassuolo, but Roma exercised the buy-back clause inserted into his contract, and he is now back with the Italian giants after spending two years away.

However, with United interested, he could be on the move again. Michael Carrick is almost certain to hang up his boots at the end of the season, while Marouane Fellaini has stalled over a new contract.

Juan Mata and Ander Herrera’s current contracts expire at the end of the season, and although United are set to trigger the one-year extensions that will see them stay till 2019, it puts the club in a rather tricky situation in the middle of the pitch.

Pellegrini would be an ideal long-term replacement if any player were to leave the club, and Jose Mourinho is certainly interested in bringing the Roma star to Old Trafford.
