Juan Mata was expected to be sidelined after Jose Mourinho succeeded Louis van Gaal as Manchester United manager in mid-2016. However, the Spanish international has ended up becoming one of the most important players on Mourinho’s list.

Juan Mata recently rejected a huge move to Chinese Super League in order to stay in Manchester. Mata is expected to stay at United, with boss Mourinho poised to trigger a clause in his contract that would extend his stay by a year, as the midfielder’s current deal would end by the end of the season.

According to The Sun, the Spaniard was approached by representatives from China to gauge his interest in moving, and was offered a huge raise from his current £165,000-a-week wages – £375,000-a-week after tax, to be precise.

But he expressed his desire to play at Old Trafford for one more year, and help the Red Devils win the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho’s side has started the season in top form with six wins and two draws from their opening eight Premier League matches, in which the 29-year-old has played a vital role in securing the points to remain in touch with league leaders Man City.

His recent performances have reportedly helped the Spaniard to convince Mourinho to extend his contract until 2019 summer. Mata has made over 115 appearances for United, scoring 28 goals in the process and creating many more.

A Red Devils source said: “Juan was offered a sizable amount of money to go to China. They were visiting last month and made it to his reps. He sees his future here though and is determined to stay.

“He hasn’t got long left but the option on his contract will almost-certainly be taken up. The club doesn’t want him to leave on a free next summer. He is represented by his dad and has been pushing for a longer-term deal.”
