REVEALED: The Player Mourinho Scouted During The Sweden-Italy Match
Jose Mourinho is obsessed with the wing position, and there is no doubt about it. His main experimentation occurs in that area, with the likes of Ashley Young trying to make way as a wing-back, and Martial and Rashford are still vying for a spot that ought to work best.
Even his transfer hunts have been primarily for a winger, evident in his pursuit of Ivan Perisic this summer, and such is his need that he will try again next June. However, should even that attempt fail to flourish, he seemingly has a replacement in sight.
The Portuguese boss was in attendance during Sweden’s latest FIFA World Cup play-off match against Italy, and as per Mail, the focus of his outing was Emil Forsberg.
The highly rated RB Leipzig winger was named the man of the match in their electric 1-0 victory against the Italians, and Mourinho might have liked what he saw.
Further, the 26-year-old is renowned for his speed, and is amongst the players who have been instrumental in Leipzig’s surprisingly bold presence in the Bundesliga.
Apart from his pace, the winger is also a skilled passer of the ball, and it is this area that he can most helpful in for the Red Devils. Despite having skilled finishers like Lukaku, and Ibrahimović too, the Premier League giants constantly face challenges when it comes to creating opportunities, which ensures that otherwise decent runs into the box are left in vain.
Forsberg will be the ideal, if not the better option, should the Perisic talks fail yet again. But there is no indication that the Swede will be a cheaper alternative. To the contrary, if the past is any indication, RB Leipzig aren’t easy negotiators, as evident in the manner in which they drew out Liverpool’s attempts to sign Naby Keita.
Fueled by Keita’s transfer and the financial backing of Red Bull, the side will be under no pressure to sell their prized winger. Perhaps Mourinho’s desperation to land a world class player for his flanks won’t be eased quite too well.
