What Mauricio Pochettino Needs To Fix If They Are To Stand A Chance At Winning The League

A few days ago, fans would have put their money on Tottenham Hotspur being the likeliest team to win the Premier League title. But a 0-2 loss in the North London derby on Saturday has crushed the expectations of a million Spurs fans.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are always considered great contenders, and at the start of every season, their supporters expect them to be on the verge of doing something great in English football, and possibly in Europe.

Many would have given Tottenham the upper hand before the start of the match against rivals Arsenal, who sat four points below them, but first-half goals from Mustafi and Sanchez were enough to give the Gunners the bragging rights in North London.

While the likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette, and Aaron Ramsey were brilliant yesterday, Spurs heroes Harry Kane and Dele Alli failed to justify their goodwill.

Following the derby defeat, the Lilywhites have only recorded away wins 4 times in 86 games against top-tier opponents like Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool – a record with which they cannot fancy their chances to win the league.

A team simply cannot lift the title without winning away from home against top contenders, which is why it appears likely that Spurs will have to be satisfied with a mere top 4 finish, or even worse, if the poor record continues this season.

Pochettino, since being appointed in the summer of 2014, has led Spurs into 17 away games against the top six, and of those, he has managed just ONE win, which came against Man City at the Etihad in February 2016.
