United and City are both keen on the possibility of signing Real Madrid youngster Mateo Kovacic.

The Croatian has been an in-and-out visitor in the Bernabeu first team, and is reportedly frustrated over the lack of game-time. Kovacic is yet to make a La Liga start this season, and is rumoured to have been contemplating a move away from the Spanish capital.

And according to Spanish outlet Don Balon, the Mancunian giants have set their sights on signing the talented midfielder during the January transfer window.

The Sky Blues are on the lookout for a replacement for the aging Yaya Toure, and have found potential in the Galactico.

On the other hand, with Michael Carrick likely to depart at the end of the campaign and Marouane Fellaini entering the latter stages of his contract, the Red Devils want a ball-playing midfielder to support and offer freedom to Paul Pogba as well.

However, though Zinedine Zidane’s squad rotation has hardly strayed off from the trio of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, and Casemiro, it is among the Frenchman’s best interests to keep hold of the Croatian international.

Nevertheless, it was also reported that rejecting a handsome offer for the 23-year-old could prove to be too difficult for Los Blancos, especially considering their squad depth in midfield.
