OFFICIAL: Leon Goretzka Signs Contract With His Next Club, Will Join In The Summer
Schalke have confirmed that their stellar midfielder, Leon Goretzka, will join Bayern Munich in the summer.
The 22-year-old was pursued heavily by Liverpool, but it was the Bavarians who eventually came out on top.
Confirming the move, Schalke’s Sporting Director, Christian Heidel, stated: “Leon Goretzka informed us at the beginning of this week that he wishes to leave the club to join Bayern Munich.
“We regret that. Yesterday Karl-Heinz Rummenigge informed us that Leon had his medical. We lose a very good player. He signed at Bayern a contract starting from 1 July 2018.
“We did everything to keep Leon at Schalke. Last summer there was no agreement with him and his agent. He wanted more time to see the sportical development. We can deal with this situation; it was not a total surprise. We are prepared.”
After joining the Bundesliga side in 2013, Goretzka went on to net 19 goals in 130 appearances, and emerged as one of the brightest prospects in Europe.
Head coach Domenico Tedesco had this to say about the development: “We are sad and disappointed to lose Leon the player and the person… There’s no doubt Leon is a key component of the team.”
This further strengthens Bayern, and it will be important to see if the move has any domino effect going into the next season.
