Manchester United have initiated a move to sign Napoli midfielder Jorginho, according to reports in Italy.

According to Italian news outlet Rai Sport, the 26-year-old’s ‘agent and other members of his entourage met with United’s representatives’ to discuss a potential deal that could see the player move to Old Trafford in the summer.

United are in desperate need of a midfielder, considering the fact that Michael Carrick is set to bring an end to his playing career at the end of the season, Marouane Fellaini is likely to leave come summer, and both Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic are approaching 30.

Jose Mourinho’s men have been on the lookout for a new midfield dynamo to support Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay for the next few years, and have noted some potential targets, such as Carlos Soler and Jean Michel Seri.

Jorginho has been added to that list, and according to the report, is said to be Mourinho’s ideal choice of replacement for Carrick. However, despite beginning discussions, the move is only likely to take place in the summer transfer window.

Speaking about how the arrival of Sanchez could impact on United’s future transfer plans, Mourinho recently stated: ‘If we have in our mind in the summer to improve the team in two or three positions, basically to improve the team in all the departments, if you have the chance to do something now it means that you don’t do in the summer.

‘Another thing is we get one or two players just to improve a little bit the squad and then in the summer you are going to do it again. ‘No. In the summer, we would probably have three transfers to do. If we do one now, in the summer it is three minus one.’
