United are reportedly keen on securing the signature of James Rodriguez in the summer, but have been told that his future lies in Real Madrid’s hands.

The Colombian has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu, and was allowed to leave on a two-year loan to Bayern Munich.

Since his switch to the German giants, he has found his form again, and several clubs have been plotting a move for his services.

In his 16 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, Rodriguez has managed an impressive tally of four goals and six assists. His 8 appearances in the Champions League have further yielded another goal and assist, and his influence has not escaped the eyes of his suitors.

According to Don Balon, Jose Mourinho is eager to bring the 26-year-old to Old Trafford, as part of a new project that will see him spend heavily in the summer transfer window once more.

Rodriguez still has another year left to run on his loan agreement with Bayern, but could even be recalled by Real at the end of the season.

It is unlikely that this recall will be down to the club wanting to make him a part of their squad, however, and they are more likely to do so only to sell him on to another interested club.

Mourinho has reportedly approached the player’s entourage about a move, and is eager to secure his services.

However, the move may be complicated by United’s uneasy relationship with Real, owing to the latter’s incessant pursuit of David De Gea.
