Paris Saint-Germain have joined the race for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, and are prepared to go head-to-head with several clubs for his signature, according to reports.

The Belgian is often hailed as one of the Premier League’s best defenders, and is a crucial figure in Tottenham’s best starting XI. However, the club is facing the prospect of losing him in the summer of 2019, after contract talks reached a standstill.

Negotiations have reportedly been going on for over a year now, but neither the player’s camp, nor the club are ready to agree to each other’s terms, and thus, he could be forced to depart at the end of the season.

Alderweireld has a £25 million buy-out clause in his contract, which will activate in the summer of 2019 – a price that is ridiculously low for a player of his quality in today’s inflated transfer market. It comes as no surprise then, that several clubs are lining up to bid for his services.

The French club enjoys a very good relationship with the North Londoners, having sold both Lucas Moura and Serge Aurier to them in recent transfer windows, and this could work in their favour.

Barcelona too, would be an interesting prospect for the 29-year-old, who could fancy the prospect of seeing the peak years of his career out at a massive club like the Catalan giants.

United, on the other hand, would also be a good option for Alderweireld, but the possibility of him moving to Old Trafford looks bleak. Spurs do not enjoy the best of relationships with the Red Devils, and would also be against the idea of strengthening a direct title rival.

However, the Mancunian giants have money to spend, and could offer a bid that might be too hard to turn down for the Lilywhites. For now though, it appears as though PSG have the upper hand.
