Mesut Ozil was the Gunner that most Man United fans were hoping to see in their famous Red jersey at the end of the winter window.

However, it was Alexis Sanchez that eventually ended up coming in from London, and many still kept this as a sign that the German assist-king would be making the switch around deadline day.

However, much to their dismay, Ozil signed a new contract at the Emirates, destroying all hopes of a transfer. Now, reports have emerged explaining why United didn’t pursue the player prior to the extension being signed.

As per M.E.N, it was the form of Jesse Lingard that ensured United were content with their options, and didn’t make a move for the former Real Madrid man.

Lingard has been having an electric season so far, and has certainly made up for his slow start by outscoring, and in many cases, outperforming fellow starlets Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

It was precisely this that led to the Red Devils not going on with the initial plans for Ozil, as the German international was already a no.10 surplus to requirements.

With the exit of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, this need became all the more evident, and so, all plans for the move were scrapped.

With 13 goals to his name already, the 25-year-old Mancunian youngster has shown a hunger that is remarkable. At the international stage too, he has been eager in his performances, and recently showcased as much against Holland and Italy.

All in all, with 39 caps already, Lingard is increasingly looking like the next big thing at Old Trafford, and the choice to keep him over potentially signing the likes of Ozil speaks volumes about his preference at his home club.

But can he keep this up consistently for the seasons to come?
