Manchester United have identified a replacement for Italian right-back Matteo Darmian.

The reigning Europa League champions have been in the news off late with a summer deal in offloading Darmian.

And now, Jose Mourinho is believed to have identified the player he feels will be the best possible replacement for Darmian, who has failed to hold on to a place in his side.

According to a report in Spanish publication El Gol Digital, the Mancunian giants have set their focus on Valencia right-back Joao Cancelo.

The talented 23-year-old is currently on loan at Italian powerhouse Inter Milan, and has been a regular player at the San Siro. The promising youngster joined the Nerazzurri on loan from Los Che last summer, and has been impressive throughout the campaign.

The report states that the player will convert his loan move from the Spanish club to Inter into a permanent deal before heading to Old Trafford. But it may not be that simple.

Certain reports claim that Inter are also hopeful of securing the 23-year-old’s services on a two-year loan deal with a compulsory purchase option at the end of the campaign.

Inter are seeking a manner in which a lucrative deal could be handed, but United are confident they can lure the player to Old Trafford and keep him away from Inter’s clutches.

Darmian is expected to join Juventus in the summer of 2018, and that could see full-back Kwadwo Asamoah join Inter instead. In this manner, every party could end up being happy with their respective deals.

Darmian, who was signed by Louis van Gaal in the 2015-16 campaign, has made only 13 appearances in all competitions this term for Jose Mourinho’s side.

He recently made a cameo appearance in the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur after a full 90 minutes against Bournemouth midweek.
