Manchester United have tabled a £62 million offer for Real Madrid star Raphael Varane.

Jose Mourinho is hoping to spend big in the upcoming summer transfer window, having already admitted that the Red Devils will have to flex their financial muscle if they are to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.

The Portuguese tactician intends to add reinforcements in midfield as well as defence, with the centre-back area being of major concern.

While Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have failed to nail their spots down in the team despite being present since Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure, Marcos Rojo continues to battle recurring injuries.

Meanwhile, summer 2017 signing Victor Lindelof, despite being impressive of late, hasn’t completely adjusted to life in England, thereby leaving Eric Bailly as the only viable long-term candidate in central defence.

Therefore, Mourinho intends to sign an experienced centre-back come summer, and while United have been linked with the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Samuel Umtiti, the newest defender rumoured to be on their wishlist happens to be a familiar old name.

According to Spanish outlet Don Balon, the former Real Madrid manager has reignited his interest in Raphael Varane, submitting a £62 million bid in the hopes of securing his services, along with a mega deal that offers the 25-year-old a bumper pay rise.

The France international appears to have nailed his spot in the Galacticos’ backline alongside Sergio Ramos this season, which could prove to be a major roadblock in United’s pursuit of his signature.

However, the report does add that if Zinedine Zidane happens to sign a new centre-back in the summer, Varane would genuinely consider moving to the Theatre of Dreams.
